Anjum Ara has also been a ward councilor of Darbhanga Municipal Corporation twice. Her husband Sibgatullah Khan alias Dabboo Khan has been a ward councilor of Darbhanga Municipal Corporation. He is also the chairman of Darbhanga Muharram Committee now. He is also a member of District Congress Committee. She has become mayor after winning the recently held municipal elections. He defeated his nearest rival Dharamsheela Gupta of BJP by 8734 votes. In this election, Anjum Ara got total record 30114 votes. This time, for the first time, the mayoral elections in Bihar were held directly by public vote. In such a situation, it can be assumed that Anjum Ara has a direct influence among the public in the politics of Darbhanga. For the first time in 2012, Anjum Ara became the councilor of Ward 24. At that time she was not affiliated with any political party. Again she was elected ward councilor in 2017 and now she is the mayor of the corporation. Anjum Ara was still not openly participating in any program of Congress, but her husband is very active in Congress. In the mayoral election, Anjum Ara got the benefit of BJP opposition, Congress-RJD support in the form of votes, as Dabbu Khan was earlier in RJD and was very close to former minister Ali Ashraf Fatmi.
